The A/C You Never Use Will Fail the Week You Leave Town
Cars kept in the fog belt go years without needing cooling, and disuse damages an air conditioning system more reliably than hard use ever does.
Summer in the Richmond and the Sunset rarely calls for air conditioning. Cars here can go two or three years without the button being pressed deliberately, and then the owner drives inland in August and discovers the system does nothing at all. The failure is not a coincidence of timing.
Disuse is the actual failure mode
An air conditioning compressor is driven by the engine belt through a clutch, and its internals are lubricated by oil carried around the system dissolved in the refrigerant. That oil only circulates while the compressor is turning. A compressor that has not run in a year has had no lubrication reaching its seals and bearings in that time.
Seals are the first casualty. The shaft seal on the compressor and the O-rings at every joint are rubber compounds that stay pliable through contact with refrigerant oil. Left dry they harden and shrink, and a hardened seal leaks — slowly, then completely.
Refrigerant escaping through a dry seal is what most owners eventually experience as the system blowing warm. The system is not empty because someone did something wrong. It is empty because nothing kept the seals alive.
The compressor itself can seize once the oil film is gone, and a seized compressor on a belt-driven accessory is a considerably larger problem than a leak. It can shred the belt, and on most modern cars one belt drives the alternator and water pump as well.
The damp climate adds its own problem
Evaporator cores sit in a dark, permanently humid box behind the dashboard and condense water by design. Where the system runs regularly the airflow dries it out between uses. Where it does not, the core stays damp and grows a biological film, and that is the source of the sour smell that appears the moment cold air is called for after a long gap.
Drain tubes carry condensate out under the car, and they block with debris when they are not regularly flushed by use. A blocked drain puts water into the passenger footwell, which is usually misdiagnosed as a leaking windshield seal or a door membrane.
Fog conditions here mean the system does more work than owners think even when nobody presses the button. Most vehicles run the compressor automatically in defrost mode, because dehumidified air clears a windshield far faster than warm air alone. That is genuinely useful nine months of the year and it depends on a system that holds refrigerant.
The habit that prevents all of it
Run the air conditioning for about ten minutes once a month, whatever the weather. Set it cold, put the fan up, and let the compressor cycle properly. That circulates oil across every seal and bearing, dries the evaporator core, and flushes the drain.
Do it with the windows down if the cabin is already cold. The point is the compressor turning, not the cabin temperature.
Use the recirculation setting sparingly in damp weather. Drawing in outside air helps the cabin dry out, while recirculating keeps moisture cycling through a core that is already wet.
What to expect if it has already stopped
Have the system diagnosed rather than topped up. A can of refrigerant from an auto parts store puts gas into a system that is leaking, which cools for a few weeks and then leaves you in the same position with less money. Those cans also often contain sealant, which contaminates recovery equipment and gives shops a legitimate reason to decline the work afterward.
A proper diagnosis means a pressure test on both sides, a check for oil residue at the joints, and usually dye traced under ultraviolet light. That identifies where it is going, which determines whether this is an O-ring, a condenser damaged by road debris, or a compressor.
Ask about the receiver-drier or accumulator if the system has been open to the air. It absorbs moisture and becomes saturated once exposed, and a system rebuilt around a saturated drier will corrode from the inside.
Book it in spring rather than during the first hot week, when every shop in the city is doing the same job. San Francisco Auto Repair on Geary Boulevard can test it in an afternoon, and finding a dry seal in March is a much cheaper conversation than finding a seized compressor in Sacramento in July.
